To the student: Look at the quotation that begins this book-- “Sometimes people forget that you’re a human being, and that you’re no different than any other mortal.” Write a paragraph about what you think Jesse Owens meant. Use examples from the book or current sports stars.Select an athlete—current or past-- and write a summary of the interesting aspects of his/her life.
For discussion: What are some of the obstacles that the women athletes in the book faced? Minority athletes?
As a class, prepare your own Lives of the Athletes book. Have each student select his or her current favorite athlete. Go the library and research their lives and accomplishments and write an essay. Illustrate the selections and bind the book.
